Fairtrade Shops
Fairtrade shops are making the world fairer
by removing the disadvantages suffered by producers in the developing
countries.
Our mission is to promote social equity,
environmental protection and economic security through trade,
awareness-raising and campaigning.
Specifically, common Fairtrade shop goals are:
* paying fair
prices to producers which reflect the true cost of production
- world market prices often do not cover even the costs of
the raw materials;
* supporting
producer organisations in their social and environmental projects, such
as developing health facilities and tree planting;
* promoting
gender equality in pay and working conditions to change the traditional
low position of women in society;
* advising on
product development to increase access to markets
* committing
to long term relationships to provide stability and security;
* campaigning
to highlight the unequal system of world trade which places profit
above human rights and threatens our environment.
The Maastricht Fairtrade Shop sells a wide
range of fairly traded goods from around the world: tea, coffee, wine,
chocolate and other foods, multicultural crafts and artifacts, musical
instruments, jewelry, textiles and handmade cards.
